BREXIT BREAKDOWN: UK Foreign Minister QUITS, Theresa May Facing REVOLT

"I like Theresa May, I think she's a good prime minister", Davis said.

But despite being a strong opponent of a soft Brexit Ms McVey may decide that her best interests are served by remaining inside the tent.

May promised to deliver a "hard" Brexit when she came to power, but has since dialed back those aspirations following a loss of her Commons majority in last year's snap elections.

May said the plan would deliver frictionless trade with Europe and was the "only way to avoid a hard border" between the U.K.'s Northern Ireland and European Union member Ireland.

"Friday's announcement was turning red lines into a white flag, and David Davis has made that so clear in his resignation letter, " Rees-Mogg said.

Johnson rocked the Government by becoming the second Cabinet minister to resign in less than 24 hours.

Brexit-backing lawmakers have been angered by May's plans, saying they will keep Britain too close to the European Union and limit its ability to strike new trade deals.

Johnson gave a scathing verdict on Theresa May's Brexit plans tonight as his resignation letter said the "Brexit dream is dying, suffocated by needless self doubt".

She said she and the two departed ministers "do not agree about the best way of delivering our shared commitment to honoring the result of the referendum" in which United Kingdom voters opted to leave the EU.

The two departures shatter May's own proclamation of cabinet unity last Friday, when she believed she had, after two years of wrangling, secured agreement on Britain's biggest foreign and trading policy shift in nearly half a century. Many took the opportunity to make fun of the former Brexit Secretary over his short tenure and the timing of his decision to quit.

"This mess is all of the Prime Ministers own making", opposition Labour Party leader Jeremy Corbyn told lawmakers.

Jeremy Wright is the new culture secretary. "But I'm getting on with delivering what the British people want".

When asked whether May would contest any vote on a confidence motion in her leadership, her spokesman said: "Yes".
