Britain's May reasserts her authority after Brexit resignations

Davis said he could not support May's plan to maintain close trade and regulatory ties with the European Union, which he said gave "too much away, too easily".

Outlining the scale of the task ahead to enable an orderly 21-month transition following the UK's departure from the European Union next March, he said: "We are not so far from the final agreement, 20%".

"It seems to me we're giving too much away, too easily, and that's a unsafe strategy at this time", Davis said in a BBC radio interview Monday morning.

The Prime Minister now faces a stormy meeting with Tory MPs and peers in Parliament on Monday evening as she tries to keep her fragile administration together.

Other pro-Brexit Cabinet ministers said they supported May and would not resign. "His replacement will be announced shortly".

"This is the Brexit that is in our national interest".

He said: "Two years to come to a position".

The Labour MP accused the Government of not being able to "blame" anyone else for the "delay" in Brexit negotiations.

The Foreign Secretary backed the proposals at Chequers despite claiming that defending the plans during the meeting was like "polishing a turd".

Opposition politicians were quick to capitalize on May's troubles.

Ultimately, the type of Brexit they want - a clean, hard Brexit in which the United Kingdom moves far away from the EU's single market and customs union - simply doesn't have the support of a majority of MPs in the House of Commons.

Mrs May however appears to have lived to fight another day, with no vote of no confidence tabled by her MPs.

But former Conservative leader William Hague, writing in the Daily Telegraph, said May´s critics had failed to produce "any credible alternative proposal" and warned that further resignations could put Brexit itself "at risk".

May told the House of Commons on Monday that her program - which would allow the free movement of goods, but not services - is the "right Brexit " because it would make it possible to avoid checks at the border between the republic and Northern Ireland.

This is a message that got through to even her biggest critics, with leading Brexiteer backbencher Jacob Rees-Mogg telling waiting reporters outside the room that he would not support any challenge against her.

He added that he would not run for the leadership of the Conservative Party in the future.

There was speculation on Monday night that Brady had received letters from 48 MPs.

Long before the Brexit referendum and its aftermath, the Conservative Party was split on Europe, and May has struggled to unite the warring wings under her leadership.
