Netflix launches ‘smart downloads’ to queue your next offline episode automatically

The streaming-video giant is launching today (July 10) a tool that automatically deletes downloaded episodes of TV shows from your smartphone after you watch and replaces them with the next available episodes, Netflix announced.

With Smart Downloads, the Netflix app will detect when a user has watched an episode, then remove it from the device and automatically add the next episode.

The Smart Downloads feature is available today for Android users and will be available on iOS later this year. Unfortunately, it's unclear if it's also making its way to iPhones and iPads, but we asked the company and will let you know once we find out.

"Whenever possible, we want Netflix to do the work for you", said Cameron Johnson, director of product innovation at Netflix.

Netflix wants to start keeping your downloads fresh for you.

May Loyalist Jeremy Hunt Named as Foreign Secretary
But as Foreign Secretary in May's government, he was prone to gaffes and criticized for not being on top of his brief. Later, he told the BBC the United Kingdom was giving "too much away, too easily" in negotiations with the EU.

The feature is part of an update to Netflix's Android mobile app this week.

New to Netflix this month is the latest season of Orange Is the New Black, a fresh batch of Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee, Somebody Feed Phil: The Second Course, Shameless season 8, and more. But obviously, you must stop by a WiFi hotspot in order to make everything happen.

Smart Downloads can be turned off straight from the app's settings if you like.

Now Playing: Watch this: Netflix "smart downloads" manage your offline episodes. Control of the new feature still lies with the user, as-should you choose to do so-you can turn it off and enjoy downloads the old-fashioned and inherently more annoying way too.

Netflix says the feature is mostly aimed at public transit commuters who may have limited or poor network coverage during their journey.
