LONDON ― U.K. Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson on Monday was the latest cabinet minister to resign over Brexit negotiations, placing Prime Minister Theresa May's grip on power in doubt just days before U.S. President Donald Trump is set to visit Britain.

Tory digital minister Matt Hancock - known for his self-branded social networking app - will now takeover Hunt's portfolio as Health Secretary. "It is with sadness that I step down" - and he then posted an image of his resignation letter to May.

Johnson reportedly compared the promotion of the plan to "polishing a turd".

'His replacement will be announced shortly.

Who will be the next Prime Minister if Theresa May loses a confidence vote?

Johnson, a polarising figure and a former mayor of London, was a leading spokesperson for the campaign calling for Britain's departure from the European Union in advance of a June 2016 referendum. Only two days ago it seemed May had pushed through her Brexiteer government members a plan that could help reach an agreement with the European Union on withdrawal.

Davis quit late Sunday saying he could not support May's plans for close trade and regulatory ties with the bloc after the United Kingdom leaves the European Union next year.

"This is the Brexit that is in our national interest", May told members of the House of Commons on Monday.

Briefly addressing Johnson's resignation, May told lawmakers that she wanted to "recognize the passion that the former foreign secretary demonstrated" as he touted Britain's global ambitions.

Many pro-Brexit MPs welcomed Johnson's resignation on Monday, noting that it means he was standing by his principles.

But ministerial aide Chris Green resigned his position as a parliamentary private secretary to the Department for Transport after the meeting, saying in a letter to Mrs May that she had confirmed his fears that "we would not really leave the EU" under her proposals.

"We must have collective responsibility", Johnson wrote to May.

Even before Johnson quit, Labour Party Leader Jeremy Corbyn had said the Cabinet's discord over May's Brexit plan showed she was "incapable of delivering" a workable plan and should step down.

There was a crisis in government, he said, adding: "It is clear this government can not secure a good deal for Britain".

Under Conservative Party rules, a leadership race could be triggered if at least 48 of her MPs declared their support for one. "I like Theresa May, I think she is a good prime minister".

May, the leader of the Conservative party, believed she had secured a hard-won agreement with her deeply divided cabinet of ministers on Friday to keep the closest possible trading ties with the EU.

"How's that going?" a minister could be heard adding, amid the peals of laughter.

The value of the British pound dropped on worldwide markets after Johnson's announcement, having risen after the announcement Friday that a Cabinet deal on Brexit had been agreed.

Still, Johnson's exit seems to have caught many by surprise.
