YouTube removed the clip within a few hours, citing violation of its policy on harassment and bullying.

This was meant to combat fake news on the platforms of the world's largest video-sharing network and give publishers more opportunities to make money.

Robert Kyncl, YouTube's chief business officer, said YouTube isn't trying to fund specific news coverage - rather, the grants are about seeding "long-term sustainable skills" for web video.

Chief Product Officer Neal Mohan said the company isn't just compiling a simple list of trusted news outlets, noted that the definition of authoritative is "fluid" and then added the caveat that it won't simply boil down to sources that are popular on YouTube.

YouTube will show previews and links to news articles and their sources in its search results, along with a reminder that facts and details can change in developing stories. YouTube will also add more members to its team that supports news publishers. Starting Monday, users will begin seeing information from third parties, including Wikipedia and Encyclopedia Britannica, alongside videos in that category. In March, YouTube CEO Susan Wojcicki promised new features to make YouTube a more reliable source of information during a South by Southwest panel, stating that "this has been a year of fake news and misinformation and we have seen the importance of delivering information to our users accurately". "So far, local news has seen strong engagement, and we will be expanding it to dozens more markets like Cincinnati, Las Vegas and Kansas City", the YouTube execs wrote.

YouTube will establish a working group with reputable news organisations to improve its news experience, including Vox Media and India Today. "Authoritativeness is essential to viewers, especially during fast-moving, breaking news events, so we've been investing in new product features ..."

After a breaking news event, it takes time to verify, produce and publish high-quality videos. Currently, the Top News and Breaking News features are launched in 17 countries, including the USA, U.K., France, Italy, Japan, India, Mexico, Brazil, South Africa, and Nigeria.

As part of YouTube's recent initiative, the company pledged $25 million to support journalism expertise and publishers on the platform.

As part of the partnership with MediaWise, six YouTube creators - including John Green, Ingrid Nilsen and Mark Watson - will be creating videos meant to raise awareness about digital literacy and help educate teens about identifying legit sources of news and information.
