England nowhere near their potential, says manager Gareth Southgate

England nowhere near their potential, says manager Gareth Southgate

The surge of support for Southgate is a remarkable turnaround from the mid-1990s when he was ridiculed for missing a decisive penalty in England's semi-final shootout defeat to Germany at the 1996 European Championships.

Speaking to Sky News, the ex-footballer said: "Football's coming home, I couldn't listen to it for 20 years, frankly".

Southgate added: "That ended in disappointment and it is nice to be able to put a different frame on it now".

He said: "We thought we'd do well because you've got all the youngsters in now, you know there's no superstars where they just walk about, "I can do what I like".

"I would just walk out of the room, it is an anthem and has followed the team for a long time but involved some hard moments as well".

England face Croatia tonight in just the third semi-final in their history, and a victory for Southgate's men will see them book a date in the World Cup final against France next Sunday in Moscow.

Southgate's England take on Croatia in the semi-final in Moscow, having beaten Sweden 2-0 in the last eight in Samara.
