‘Guardians’ actor Djimon Hounsou cast in DC’s Shazam! as the Wizard

Production on the DC Comics adaptation of Shazam may be finished, but that's not stopping us from learning about a new cast member. He's not a last minute addition being inserted into the movie during reshoots or in post-production, but instead he's been cast in the movie for awhile, but his involvement had not yet been discovered until now.

Today, we've learned who'll be playing The Wizard, the ancient sorcerer who granted Billy Batson with those powers.

The 2019 spinoff stars boy wonder Billy Batson (Disney Channel star Angel Asher), who one day encounters a unusual and mysterious wizard (Djimon Hounsou) while riding the subway.

In Shazam!, Hounsou will star alongside Asher Angel (Andi Mack) as the teenage Billy Batson, Mark Strong (Kingsman: The Golden Circle) as the evil Dr. Thaddeus Sivana, and Zachary Levi as the titular crime-fighter Billy turns into when he utters the magic word "Shazam!"Jack Dylan Grazer (It) is also set to play Billy's best friend Freddy Freeman, and Grace Fulton (Annabelle: Creation) as another friend of Billy's".

Ron Cephas Jones was in talks for the role a few months back, but due to scheduling conflicts he had to drop out of the role, paving the way for Hounsou to step in.

However, Zaman and veteran all-rounder Shoaib Malik (43) saw the world No1 team past the finish line. D'Arcy Short (76) and captain Aaron Finch shared a 95-run opening stand in just 9.5 overs.

The size of Hounsou's role isn't clear, but if he was able to shoot his role without anyone finding out about it, there's a chance it could be only a quick appearance when his character gives Billy Baston his superpowers.

Hounsou also played the Kree mercenary Korath the Pursuer in Guardians of the Galaxy as well as the upcoming Captain Marvel - so he's pulling off the rare feat of having significant roles in both the Marvel and DC universe at the same time.

Hounsou rose to fame in major roles in films like Amistad and Gladiator, and was previously in another DC title - playing Papa Midnite in 2005's Constantine.

Directed by David F. Sandberg from a script written by Henry Gayden and Darren Lemke, Shazam! hits theaters on April 5, 2019.
