Meeting Putin Might Be Easier Than Meeting Theresa May

President Donald Trump will likely declare United States support forNATO's mutual defense doctrine while pressing for increased spending commitments from NATOallies at a high-stakes summit in Brussels, a senior administration official said on Tuesday.

"I have to say, I think it's very sad when Germany makes a massive oil and gas deal with Russia where we're supposed to be guarding against Russia", Trump said at breakfast with Stoltenberg.

Trump has called on allied countries to meet or exceed the 2014 Wales summit goal of spending 2 percent GDP on defense spending. On top of that Germany is just paying just a little bit over 1% whereas the United States is paying 4.2% of a much larger GDP.

"We're protecting Germany, France and everybody. this has been going on for decades", Trump said. "I want to compliment the secretary general, he's worked very hard on this problem".

Mr Trump has linked the issue of USA military spending to the EU's trade surplus with the USA, complaining that the bloc "makes it impossible for our farmers and workers and companies to do business in Europe" and then "want us to happily defend them through Nato".

LONDON FALLING: US Embassy Warns Americans of 'VIOLENT' PROTESTS During Trump Visit
The US Embassy in London has issued a warning to Americans in Britain to keep a " low profile " during Donald Trump's visit . But Trump is unlikely to see many of those who have mobilized to protest against his visit.

Trump's negative feelings towards North Atlantic Treaty Organisation and accusations that they don't pay their fair share go all the way back to 2016 and the presidential election.

During a rally last week in Montana, Trump vowed that he would "tell NATO: 'You've got to start paying your bills.'" The president also said that Americans were "the schmucks that are paying for the whole thing".

"We do have a lot of allies, but we can not be taken advantage of. And dear Europe, spend more on your defense", he said.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel, who meets Trump at the summit, has given political backing to the Nord Stream 2 pipeline to import more gas, despite criticism from other European Union governments. After the summit and a trip to Brexit-rattled Britain, Trump meets another strongman: Russian president Vladimir Putin. "Just doesn't work!" he tweeted as he arrived in Brussels late on Tuesday.

The comments will have made for uncomfortable viewing for the rest of Nato's 29 members, whose officials have voiced fears that Mr Trump could undermine the alliance during the gathering. "Frankly, Putin may be the easiest of them all", Trump said Tuesday.

"It's also because of your leadership, because your clear message", Stoltenberg responded.

"At the summit we expect to agree an ambitious package of measures to strengthen our deterrence and defence, increase our efforts on tackling terrorism and address the threats presented by cyber and hybrid warfare".

Ahead of the gathering, Mrs May was keen to emphasise that as well as supplying additional troops for Afghanistan, the United Kingdom was one of just five alliance members to meet the target of spending 2 per cent of GDP on defence.
