Qatari envoy says letting Gazans work in Israel would calm border

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas said Sunday that he will continue paying stipends to Palestinian attackers and their families despite the Israeli parliament's decision last week to withhold hundreds of millions in funds from taxes collected on the Palestinian Authority's behalf.

Israel has demanded the return of two Israeli civilians who it says crossed into Gaza and are being held by Hamas, as well as the bodies of two soldiers who were killed in a 2014 war.

Trump announced a year ago that he will stop America's contribution to the UN Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) and the PA to put pressure on the authority to stop paying salaries to Palestinian prisoners inside Israeli jails and prisoners released by Israel, as well as to the families of Palestinians killed by Israel.

At least 17 fires were sparked on Israeli land near the Gaza border by incendiary kites and balloons launched from Gaza by Palestinian protesters.

The measure, presented and passed by Israelis, allows their government to seize about seven percent of Palestine's US$5 billion budget for this year.

"We informed the world that we are against the deal of the century, we won't accept it and we won't let it pass", Abbas told the committee's members, adding "we would like to reiterate that our Arab brothers asserted to us that they are against it".

"This step is taken to appreciate Ladraa's efforts and his position to support the Palestinian people", Abbas said according to a report by the official Wafa news agency.

Stipend amounts increases as the prison time does, which Israel considers incentive for Palestinians to commit more severe acts.

Palestinian officials say that some 6,500 Palestinians are now being held in Israeli jails.

Some 35,000 political prisoners, martyrs and their families receive this stipend. Many of them were convicted of attacks or planning attacks against Israelis.
