Trump to separated migrant families: 'Don't come to our country illegally'

Speaking to reporters outside the White House before departing to Brussels for the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation summit, Trump said the problem could be solved if people stopped entering the US illegally.

"I have a solution", Trump said. "Don't come to our country illegally", said Trump. Don't come to our country illegally.

The Trump administration said Monday that it would not be able to meet the court order to reunite detained migrant children under the age of 5 with their families by Tuesday.

Trump, who has previously advocated denying migrant families due process when accused of crossing the southern border illegally, also brushed off a reporter's question about whether he was calling for punishing children.

"We have laws. We have borders. It's not a good thing", Mr. Trump said. A judge rejected officials' request to extend the deadline.

The President, speaking to reporters as he departed the White House en route to the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation summit in Brussels, Belgium, went on to defend US Immigration and Customs Enforcement, which is facing increased scrutiny from Democrats and immigrant advocates. It's a disgrace. These people go into harm's way.

Trump said Democrats want open borders and are soft on stopping crime. "We want no crime and we want borders where borders mean something. All right? And, remember this, without borders, you do not have a country".
