United States woman killed in Mexico City shooting

"We extend our honest condolences to friends and family members of the deceased", the Bureau of Consular Affairs said in a statement. Mirutenko's body will be returning to the USA tomorrow.

"Out of respect for the family during this hard time, we have no further comment", the official said.

Tatiana Mirutenko and her husband, James Hoover, were at a taqueria on Saturday with two friends in the exclusive Lomas de Chapultepec neighborhood of the capital when the gunmen opened fire on a bouncer inside the establishment, according to a statement from the Mexico City attorney general's office. The bouncer was hit, but survived.

"A year ago, we were selecting flowers for the wedding", Wasyl Mirutenko, her father, told ABC 7 News on Monday. "She was telling me how wonderful, how safe it was", said Natalie Mirutenko, Tatiana's mother.

"She would give 200 percent", said Natalie.

Ms Mirutenko's death was confirmed by the US State Department. Earlier this year, the U.S. State Department issued a travel ban to five Mexican states, the same warning issued to war-torn countries like Syria, Afghanistan and Somalia. The government also warns tourists to "exercise increased caution" when visiting Cancun, Cozumel, Playa del Carmen and Mexico City.

Mirutenko played Division I volleyball at Clemson University and later worked as a senior investor relations analyst at Nektar Therapeutics in San Francisco's Mission Bay district.

Nektar Therapeutics called her a "bright and passionate rising star".

"We were devastated to hear the news of Tatiana's death". "She was always willing to help on any project across the company and had an incredibly strong work ethic".

"Many throughout Nektar, and outside the company, valued her positive energy, insight and sheer enthusiasm for life", the company said in a statement. "She will be missed by all of those who had the pleasure to know her", the club's directors Rick and Cheryl Butler said.
