All almost a dozen passengers on board survived the incident, and were flown to Ketchikan aboard Temsco helicopters and transferred for medical care.

The airplane went down on Prince of Wales Island, near Hetta Inlet, at about 2,000 feet of elevation, on heavily forested Mount Jumbo.

There are reports the plane was one of the sightseeing flights that are popular in the region. The survivors were taken to a staging area to be transported to Ketchikan, while those with injuries that required immediate medical treatment were airlifted to Ketchikan Medical Center, the Coast Guard said.

A Coast Guard helicopter located the crash site and hoisted the pilot and passengers to safety, U.S. Coast Guard Petty Officer Charly Hengen said. The downed aircraft had an emergency locator that aided rescue efforts. The Coast Guard, in a release, said all on board were reported to have received minor injuries but otherwise were in good condition.

Clint Johnson with the National Transportation Safety Board says the plane departed a fishing lodge at Steamboat Bay, on Noyes Island, at about 7:30 a.m., headed for Ketchikan. Alaska State Troopers have identified the plane as a Taquan Air flight.

Johnson said preliminary information showed that some of the passengers may have had back injuries, leg injuries, possibly a broken ankle, and some bumps, cuts and bruises. Troopers said he reported the crash. "We are thankful for their safe transport and at this time our focus is on assisting these passenger, the pilot, their families and loved ones".
