John Kerry rips Trump’s 'disgraceful’ North Atlantic Treaty Organisation speech

"A clear message from President Trump is having an impact".

Trump, who has publicly praised Russian president Vladimir Putin, brashly criticized his North Atlantic Treaty Organisation allies for not spending enough on defense during a summit early Wednesday.

U.S. President Donald Trump looks on as he holds a news conference after participating in the NATO Summit in Brussels, Belgium July 12, 2018. And the United States is being treated much more fairly.

"President Trump never at any moment, either in public or in private, threatened to withdraw from NATO", Macron told reporters.

Instead, a series of events - a black-tie dinner with business leaders, a meeting with Prime Minister Theresa May and an audience with Queen Elizabeth II - will happen outside the bustling city, where Mayor Sadiq Khan has been in a verbal battle with Trump.

Trump has been criticized for seeking the one-on-one meeting with Putin, scheduled for Monday in Helsinki, in part because of Russian meddling in the 2016 presidential election.

Merkel told reporters there followed a discussion with assurances to Trump that spending was increasing - something he later acknowledged was happening at an unprecedented rate.

But he said that since past year around an additional 33 billion dollars, not including the United States, had been raised and it was now "unnecessary" to withdraw from the organisation. The United States, far the biggest economy, spent 3.6 percent previous year, while Germany, the second biggest, paid out just 1.2 percent and only a handful of countries met the 2 percent target.

Under fire for his warm embrace of Russia's Vladimir Putin, Trump on Wednesday also turned a harsh spotlight on Germany's own ties to Russian Federation, alleging that a natural gas pipeline venture with Moscow has left Angela Merkel's government "totally controlled" and "captive" to Russian Federation.
