Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Trump's statement marked an escalation of a USA campaign to talk down Russian gas supplies to Europe in an attempt to push the US energy sector instead.

US President Donald Trump accused Germany on Wednesday of being a "captive" of Russian Federation due to its energy reliance and its support for the plan to double capacity of the Nord Stream pipeline under the Baltic Sea to Germany, bypassing traditional routes through Ukraine. On Wednesday, Trump criticized Germany for being what he called a captive of Russian energy.

"As for attempts to organize various attacks on this commercial project (Nord Stream 2 - TASS), we have said before that we consider this to be a manifestation of unfair competition", Peskov said.

Russia's Gazprom meant to have a 50 percent plus one share in the Nord Stream 2, with the rest of the shares divided between Germany's Uniper and Wintershall, Austrian OMV, France's Engie, and Anglo-Dutch Shell.
