Photographer gets dog-piled as Croatia celebrate winning goal against England

An early goal was not enough to stop Croatia from eliminating England's dream of reaching the final of the World Cup for the first time since 1966.

Mario Mandzukic put Croatia ahead after scoring in Moscow's Luzhniki stadium, giving the Balkan nation its first ever place in the finals in history, a result that surprised even some fans.

"We deserved the victory", said match-winner Mandzukic.

England have been knocked out of the World Cup after Ivan Perisic and Mario Mandžukić's goals denied the opener from Kerian Trippier.

Kieran Trippier gave England an early lead only for Ivan Perisic to equalise in the 68th minute and Mario Mandzukic to score the victor in the second period of extra time. England now play with little or no stage fright and the team is free of the inter-club rivalries that plagued the Three Lions in the past.

"Until they scored [the equaliser] we were always under cosh", Kane said. "We worked so hard, the fans were incredible, it was a tough game, a 50-50 game, when we look back we will think there's stuff we could have done better. We have had a fantastic journey, further than we thought", he added.

"We gave it everything, I know we're gonna look back and say we could have done this and what but at the end of the day it was small margins in a big game and it didn't go our way today", said striker Kane, now the tournament's top scorer with six goals.

"All these words from them we take, we were reading and we were saying 'OK, today we will see who will be exhausted.' As I said, they should be more humble, and respect opponents more. But now it's got a good foundation, so we just need to build on that and make sure we build an empire from it". It hurts, I don't know what else to say, it hurts.

Asked what the biggest thing he would take from this World Cup would be, Walker replied: "I think for me it's proving people wrong".
