The court asked how is it that foundries and other polluting industries are still being allowed to function within this delicate environmental zone which was created to protect the Taj Mahal.

- Sanjana singh (@princesssiggy) July 11, 2018A country that can not protect a priceless monument like the Taj should stop the Incredible India claptrap and big plans to attract tourists from across the world.

The Green Bench of Justices Madan B. Lokur and Deepak Gupta made the statement while hearing the verdict. Our Taj Mahal is more handsome. If you had looked after it, your foreign exchange problem would have been solved,"the bench said".

In a drastic statement, India's Supreme Court has presented the local government where the Taj Mahal is situated with an ultimatum, threatening either to demolish the iconic monument or to shut it down. It is India's biggest tourist attraction and draws eight million visitors annually.

Additionally, clusters of tiny insects that bred in the garbage-choked Yamuna River that lies beside the Taj had also infested the monument, their corrosive excrement further staining its marble.

To find the source and level of air pollution surrounding the monument, the Centre has appointed Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur.

The top court said that it will hear the matter on a daily basis from July 31.
