Big things, small packages: Aston Martin reveals V8 Cygnet

When new, the Cygnet - based on the Toyota iQ but re-trimmed and sold by Aston Martin, to help the supercar-maker meet emissions targets - came with a 97-horsepower 1.3-litre four-cylinder. Fewer than 150 units were sold in the United Kingdom, putting Aston Martin well below its goal of 4,000 per year.

Aston Martin will arrive at the 2018 Goodwood Festival of Speed with not one, but two all-new cars set to take on the famous hillclimb.

Somehow Aston Martin's engineers managed to shoehorn the 4.7-liter V-8 from the previous-generation Vantage into the tiny engine bay of the rear-engined, rear-wheel-drive Cygnet.

With 430 horsepower and 361 pound-feet of torque, the V8 Cygnet boasts an incredible power-to-weight ratio and launches to 60 miles per hour in just 4.2 seconds - quicker than the V8 Vantage S. The car's top speed has also increased to a scarcely believable 170mph - some 60mph more than for the original Cygnet. However, for those who can't make it, or indeed those who just want to catch up on bits that they've missed, Goodwood is again running a Festival of Speed livestream.

The Aston Martin Cygnet has since been known as the quirky option offered by Aston Martin to clients as an extra runabout vehicle to accompany their new grand tourer. Then, it welded in a roll cage, which became an important part of the chassis.

"It is also a fine example of the engineering talent within the company as it's no small achievement to fit the Vantage's V8 engine so harmoniously into the compact body of our little city auto".

Subframes and suspension have also been derived from a Vantage and a steel fuel tank housing has been mounted in the boot area.

Speaking of the engine, it produces 313kW of power and 490Nm of torque, put to the rear wheels through a seven-speed Sportshift II paddle-shift transmission. In order to accommodate the significantly wider front and rear tracks, the carbon composite flared extensions were made. At the back, the Aston Martin V8 Cygnet gets central twin exhaust pipes, which is a bespoke system with twin underfloor mufflers and catalytic converters. Inside the cabin, look for a carbon dash, Recaro bucket seats with four-point harnesses, and a removable Alcantara steering wheel.
