Build-A-Bear cancels pay-your-age day as crowds swamp stores

In a post on their website, the company said: 'On 12 July, you can pay your age for any furry friend in the Workshop!

Build-a-Bear announced on Facebook Thursday morning that it was closing lines at all of its stores in the United States and Canada because of crowds and safety concerns.

"Pay Your Age Day" allows customers to pay their current age for any make-your-own bear in all stores U.S., Canada and United Kingdom stores.

"The crowds have greatly exceeded our expectations and, per local authorities, queues are at capacity and we can not accept additional guests due to extreme crowds and safety concerns".

Several tweets from shoppers at malls across Maryland, D.C. and Virginia show large lines around malls waiting to get into Build-a-Bear.

Build-A-Bear Workshop's "Pay Your Age Day" drew crowds so big that the company ended the one-day sale early.

But when hundreds of people with prams and excited children flocked to stores and formed long lines that clogged shopping centre corridors, the day descended into chaos.

At the University Park Mall in Indiana, CBS affiliate WSBT described the line for the Build-A-Bear Workshop store there as "insane".

The store manager at Oakridge said they would stay open as long as they had bears to stuff.

The average bear can cost anywhere from $16 to $100 with accessories, but with the promotion, a two year old would only pay two dollars.
