Here's What's On Barack Obama's Summer Reading List

He last visited Kenya in 2015 as U.S President in what was viewed as a landmark homecoming.

In his Facebook post, Obama explained visiting Kenya is special for him since it's his family's ancestral home.

This trip will be Obama's first time revisiting the continent since leaving office in 2016.

He said that his maiden visit to the East African country while he was in his twenties profoundly influenced his experience which inspired "Dreams from My Father", the first book he wrote.

President Obama is expected in Kenya on Sunday and is expected to meet President Uhuru Kenyatta and Nasa leader Raila Odinga.

The other books suggested by the former USA leader included "A Grain of Wheat" by Ngugi wa Thiong'o and "Long Walk to Freedom" by Nelson Mandela.

Obama will deliver the lecture, themed: "Renewing the Mandela Legacy and Promoting Active Citizenship in a Changing World" in Johannesburg on Tuesday, hosted by the Nelson Mandela Foundation in partnership with the Motsepe Foundation and the Obama Foundation. In his post, Obama calls Adichie "one of the world's great contemporary writers".

Via Twitter on Friday, Obama said he was proud to visit sub-Saharan Africa more times than any other sitting President.

A Grain of Wheat by Ngugi wa Thiong'o A chronicle of the events leading up to Kenya's independence, and a compelling story of how the transformative events of history weigh on individual lives and relationships.

"As I prepare for this trip, I wanted to share a list of books that I'd recommend for summer reading, including some from a number of Africa's best writers and thinkers - each of whom illuminate our world in powerful and unique ways, " the 44th USA president said.

The other two books are "The Return" by Hisham Matar and "The World As It Is" by Ben Rhodes.
