Iowa, Illinois investigating infections linked to McDonald's salad

In about a quarter of the IL cases, people reported eating salads from McDonald's in the days before they became ill, officials said.

Public health officials in IL and Iowa have reported a spike in cases of cyclosporiasis, with at least 15 infections in Iowa and 90 others in IL.

IL has reported 90 cases since mid-May.

Health officials in both states said McDonald's is cooperating with the states, Centres for Disease Control and Prevention, and the Food and Drug Administration investigation.

The agency is asking consumers who ate a McDonald's salad since mid-May and developed diarrhea and fatigue to contact a health care provider about testing and treatment.

"This week [the Iowa Department of Public Health] has identified 15 Iowans who ate McDonald's salads in late June to early July prior to getting ill", Patricia Quinlisk, medical director of the state health department, said in a statement.

McDonald's is stopping the sale of salads at 3,000 restaurants after people became sick from a parasite causing intestinal illness.

The most common symptom of cyclosporiasis is watery diarrhea, some other ones include bloating and gas, fatigue, stomach cramps, weight loss, mild fevers and nausea.

McDonald's released the following statement: "McDonald's has been in contact with public health authorities from Iowa and IL about an increase in Cyclospora infections in those states".

It said that it had voluntarily stopped selling salads at the approximately 3,000 affected USA restaurants until it could switch to another lettuce blend supplier.

The parasite cyclospora is also involved in the recall of Del Monte Fresh vegetable trays, blamed for sickening more than 200 people in Iowa, Indiana, Minnesota and MI. McDonald's say it is re-supplying restaurants with salads from other suppliers. The illness can last a few days or up to several months.

It continued: "McDonald's is committed to the highest standards of food safety and quality control".
