The mosquitoes in these areas tested positive for West Nile

There has been a rise in West Nile Virus activity in some parts of the city, according to the Virginia Beach Mosquito Control.

"You can help protect your family and your community from West Nile virus by eliminating areas of standing water available for mosquito breeding in or near your property", said Environmental Health Specialist Simeon Baker, who manages the county's mosquito surveillance program, in a news release Friday. When mosquitoes test positive, the program increases its prevention efforts during daytime and evening hours in the area where the trap is located.

West Nile virus is an uncommon viral disease that is spread to birds, humans and other mammals through the bite of infected mosquitoes.

Most people who get infected with West Nile Virus will have either no symptoms or mild symptoms.

The elderly are more at risk of getting sick because their immune system is often weaker.

Citizens are urged to wear insect repellent when outside. No more than 50 percent DEET for adults and less than 30 percent DEET for children.

Turn over or remove containers in your yard where rainwater collects, such as plant trays, buckets, and toys.

Make sure window and door screens fit tightly to keep out mosquitoes.

Mosquitoes with West Nile virus have been found in Monroe County.
