Trump ratchets up 'fake news' rally cry overseas during United Kingdom visit

On Friday, the USA president upheld his vendetta against CNN when he denied a question from Chief White House Correspondent Jim Acosta, and instead devoted a good 20 seconds during his United Kingdom press conference with Prime Minister Theresa May to calling the media company "fake news". "CNN is fake news I don't take questions from CNN", Trump said into the microphone.

In the 28-minute-long interview, Trump made comments critical of British prime minister Theresa May's Brexit plan.

"To say the President called us "fake news" with any serious intent is, well. fake news", The Sun added. Gold stars all around for that sterling reporting job. "Let's go to a real network".

'See, that's such dishonest reporting, ' a dismissive Trump replied, ' because - of course, it happens to be NBC, which is possibly worse than CNN!'

Acosta responded by saying CNN is a real network too.

The White House correspondent reportedly asked if Trump planned to tell Russian President Vladimir Putin to stay out of US elections in the future, to which Trump answered "yes". "For the President to call her dishonest is unfair".

Trump looked back over his shoulder and gave Acosta the shortest sound bite in presidential history.

He directly condemned the president's use of the term "fake news" to inaccurately denigrate coverage he doesn't like. Roberts then asked his question.

In the statement, Roberts said he had proceeded with his question when "it became clear that the president wasn't going to entertain a question from [Acosta]".

On social media, some journalists criticized Roberts - a former CNN employee - for not standing up for the network.

"I also used to work at CNN", Roberts added. They have fine journalists there who risk their lives to cover the news around the world.

Trump and Acosta have maintained a tense relationship since Trump took office, with Acosta often taking jabs from the president and his supporters.
