Trump Calls EU 'a Foe' Ahead of Putin Meeting

In this Friday, July 13, 2018 photo, a Greenpeace protester flying a microlight passes over US President's Donald Trump's resort in Turnberry, South Ayrshire, Scotland with a banner reading "Trump: Well Below Par", shortly after the US President arrived at the hotel.

"America and the European Union are best friends".

"I think we have a lot of foes", Trump said.

President Donald Trump named the European Union, Russia and China as foes to the United States during an interview at his golf club in Scotland.

"I think we have a lot of foes", the USA leader told CBS News in an interview broadcast Sunday that was taped the day before at his Turnberry golf course in Scotland.

Trump made known at an initial breakfast meeting with NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg his questions over the security conflict posed by the Nord Stream II gas pipeline from Russian Federation to Germany. "I think the European Union is a foe, what they do to us in trade". But that doesn't mean they're bad.

The President added that "Russia is a foe in certain respects".

"Well, I think we have a lot of foes". China is a foe economically, certainly they are a foe. "I respect the leaders of those countries", Trump said.

The comments come as Trump continues to target the European Union with tariffs on aluminum and steel imports and criticize North Atlantic Treaty Organisation members over defense spending.

"Germany made a pipeline deal with Russia", Trump said. It is noteworthy, however, that last week he downplayed the idea of Russian President Vladimir Putin as an enemy, presenting him as a competitor instead.
