Finnish Summit: Trump Greets Putin

Finnish Summit: Trump Greets Putin

The two leaders met one-on-one for more than two hours, with just their interpreters present, before they were joined by their national security teams. But they emerged with no major announcements other than declaring their desire to continue constructive dialogue.

"I think we have a lot of foes", Trump said.

Looking sombre, the two leaders exchanged a few opening remarks in front of the press at the start of their summit in Helsinki.

The Russian leader was also asked about claims that he holds compromising material on Trump; there have always been rumours of a video tape in which Trump was caught in a Russian hotel with sex workers.

Ahead of Monday's meeting, Trump criticised previous United States governments on Twitter, saying: "Our relationship with Russian Federation has NEVER been worse thanks to many years of USA foolishness and stupidity and now, the Rigged Witch Hunt!". Mr. Trump and Mr. Putin did not shake hands when they entered, sullenly, but only when they began a lengthy closed-door meeting that had the diplomatic world on edge.

"Our relationship has never been worse; however, that changed as of four hours ago", Trump told reporters. We have great opportunities together."We have not been getting along very well over the past years".

Tensions have been brewing since the U.S Intelligence Community declared Russian Federation tried to meddle with the results of the 2016 United States elections.

Trump is a frequent critic of the US media and routinely dismisses stories he doesn't like as "fake news".

"Trump blames America, not Russian Federation, for Russia's attack on our election", former Rep. Joe Walsh (R-Ill.), a conservative pundit and Trump supporter, tweeted Monday morning.

The Russian foreign ministry "liked" his words and tweeted back: "We agree".

The summit will follow a larger working lunch, and will conclude with a joint news conference.

"Russia did not interfere and is not going to interfere into American domestic affairs", Putin stated, adding that this point had been made repeatedly.

It was an extraordinary press conference closing out the Trump-Putin summit, in which the American president delivered what amounted to a warm embrace to the man who for years has been isolated by the USA and Western allies for Russia's activities in Ukraine, Syria and beyond.

"We have discussions on everything from trade to military to missiles to nuclear to China". The U.S. president has also resuscitated a Stalinist charge, that the media is "the enemy of the people" in a Sunday tweet. "I think that the United States has now stepped forward along with Russian Federation".

Putin told Trump at the start of their summit on Monday that "the time has come to talk thoroughly about bilateral relations as well as various hotspots in the world".

During his turn to respond to the question of Russian accountability for the alleged election meddling, Putin responded cryptically, "Where did you get the idea that President Trump trusts me or that I trust him?"

Trump said Washington and Moscow also wanted to help the Syrian people on a humanitarian basis.

Some Kremlin watchers saw Putin's lack of punctuality as a deliberate tactic of trying to throw his vis-a-vis off balance, but others pointed out that it appears to be more of a personal trait than a well-calculated strategy.

Asked by the network whether he would ask Putin to hand over 12 Russians indicted for suspected interference in the 2016 general election, the United States president said he might. Not mentioned: Election meddling or Syria.
