Roku's new $199 wireless speakers are made especially for Roku-powered TVs

Roku's new $199 wireless speakers are made especially for Roku-powered TVs

But now, Roku's getting into the audio business with an in-house product: the company announced the Roku TV Wireless Speakers today, a set of two HomePod-esque speakers created to work exclusively with Roku TVs. The duo plus two new remote controls all ship this October.

Accompanying the Wireless Speakers is the Roku Touch remote, a unique addition to Roku's remote family.

At launch the speakers will come bundled with the high-end voice remote from previous Roku TV models and the Roku Ultra, as well as another completely new product called the Roku Touch - a battery-powered remote with programmable presets, a suite of playback controls and a built-in microphone. Additionally, Roku is introducing the new Roku Touch, which sits tabletop and can command the speakers separately from your television.

Roku promises high-quality audio with dialogue enhancements and automatic volume leveling with its speakers. Now Roku is launching a set of wireless speakers created to offer high-quality sound on Roku TVs. They're black and fairly nondescript, save for a Roku logo up top. Then, when your Roku TV Wireless Speakers arrive in late October, you'll have a dependable duo for all your binge-watching sessions. Wood further says, "Roku TV Wireless Speakers work exclusively with Roku TVs, which accounted for one out of every four smart TVs sold in the U.S.in the first quarter of 2018".

The speakers use technology from Dynastrom, the Danish multiroom-audio startup Roku acquired last fall for $3.5 million, as first reported by Variety. You can do so today at Roku's website. Miss out on the early bird special (which runs through July 23) and the price climbs a bit higher to $179.99.

While the Roku TV Wireless Speakers and new Roku Touch seem to serve relatively niche audiences at the moment, Roku believes that there's a large group out there who will enjoy the simplicity of the system over the complexity of AV receivers and 5.1 surround systems. This has been a feature many streamers have been asking for since streaming started. "Because Roku controls the software in both the speakers and TV, Roku is uniquely able to provide seamless wireless setup and connectivity, optimize sound for the picture and ensure audio video sync", today's announcement reads.
