US politician denounces Sacha Baron Cohen's TV guns prank as 'sick fraud'

The character was one of four Baron Cohen adopted in the first instalment of Who is America?, which Time said showed "a hint of genius" despite containing "too much filler".

"And contrary to her claims he did not appear in a wheelchair", the network added, before concluding that in both interviews Cohen, 46, "did not wear military apparel of any kind".

A spokesperson for Showtime, the USA channel that airs the programme, said there had been "widespread misinformation" about Baron Cohen's character Billy Wayne Ruddick Jr PhD, a parody of an online conspiracy theorist, who interviewed Bernie Sander's in the show's first episode.

Baron Cohen went undercover using prosthetics and make-up as different characters while interviewing a series of American political figures such as Sarah Palin, Bernie Sanders and Dick Cheney.

According to Vanity Fair, Billy Wayne is the same character used for Palin's segment, which has not aired yet.

Sacha Baron Cohen has duped and angered a handful of notable politicians, like Sarah Palin and Joe Walsh, for his new Showtime series "Who Is America?" that premiered on Sunday.

Arlene Klasky , Gábor Csupó and Paul Germain , creators of the original 1991 series, will return as executive producers. Rugrats first premiered on Nickelodeon in 1991 and would go on to run for nine seasons and 172 episodes.

Palin revealed last week she was one of Cohen's victims, and claimed he impersonated a disabled veteran to dupe her - causing some outrage over the stunt.

Palin previously spoke about the whole thing on "Good Morning America", with the former Republican vice presidential candidate and Alaska governor calling Cohen a "proven liar".

"Do I believe kindergarteners should be armed?" "I sat through a long "interview" full of Hollywoodism's [sic] disrespect and sarcasm - but finally had enough and literally, physically removed my mic and walked out", Palin wrote on Facebook.

On Monday, a conservative street artist replaced a billboard near the CBS Television City complex in a Los Angeles with a doctored image of Cohen in a wheelchair wearing an Army t-shirt.

It doesn't matter if you love it or hate it, none of us can control it - Sacha Baron Cohen is giving us more where that came from for the next six weeks on Sundays at 10/9 central on Showtime.
