Walmart and Microsoft team up to fight Amazon

Although Walmart already uses Microsoft services for critical applications, it will now be taking on several cloud innovation projects for external services, as well as internal applications.

Walmart announced a strategic tie-up with Microsoft on cloud technology.

Specifically, Walmart will be using Microsoft Azure and Microsoft 365 in a standardization across their brands. According to that story, Microsoft has had talks with Walmart about collaborating, which could create Walmart stores in the vein of Amazon Go and let the companies take on Amazon at the retail level.

The arrangement will use the full range of Microsoft's cloud solutions, including Microsoft Azure and Microsoft 365, to make shopping faster and easier for customers.

Microsoft's business cloud computing platform known as Azure will help Walmart manage operations ranging from refrigeration and air conditioning to improving its supply chain and transportation. This includes potential usage of modern workplace tools such as Workplace Analytics and OneDrive in order to increase productivity through better communication and collaboration.

"Walmart is a pioneering retailer, committed to empowering its employees and delivering the best experience for its customers wherever they are". Microsoft will be deploying its own engineers across Walmart offices to help with the new partnership, and the companies are reportedly working on a modern new system to share product sales data with suppliers.

Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella told the Journal that the competition with Amazon is "core" to the companies' team-up.

While there were recent rumours of Microsoft working with Walmart to build cashierless stores for Walmart to take on Amazon Go, Walmart's head of USA e-commerce Marc Lore said the company is working on its own on that front.
