Wimbledon 2018: Azarenka, Murray lose in mixed doubles final

Victoria Azarenka strongly answered criticism made by the BBC commentator John Inverdale towards her. Inverdale made a big claim when the Belarusian hit a double fault during the mixed doubles match she was playing alongside Jamie Murray against Harriet Dart and Jay Clarke, saying, 'Azarenka's second serve - woof!' "Vika" and Murray prevailed 6-2, 6-2 dominating in the match.

Having won here last year with Martina Hingis, the 32-year-old Scot finds himself back in the final with Victoria Azarenka.

The first set went with serve as Murray and Azarenka were forced to come through a seven-deuce game on serve on their way to forcing a first set tie-break.

And he was on the receiving end this time around, as he and Azarenka failed to recover from an early break of serve in the second, although they did at least force their opponents to serve for the match.

Murray and Azarenka had fought back from a set down twice before to reach the final, but they could not mount another comeback as hopes of British success disappeared. I didn't really return well enough, to be honest.

"We lost which is disappointing when you work so hard to get to the final". It was a lot of fun to play with Vika, she's a great player and a great champion.

For a deposed champion, Jamie Murray was in reasonably good spirits.

Peya's serve proved to be unbreakable and Melichar was playing a blinder as she desperately tried to make amends for losing in the women's doubles final on Saturday evening.

Azarenka, who lost to Karolina Pliskova in the second round of the singles, added: "It's been a great two weeks. It's going to give me a lot of motivation".

The pair have not ruled out teaming up again for mixed doubles in the future.

"They played well. Very solid".

However, players who go into matches this year with a pre-existing injury ran the risk of being fined up to 100% of their prize money if Wimbledon believe they should not have played.

In the Gentlemen's and Ladies' Singles, first round losers received £39k - an increase of 11.4% from the year before.

The runner-up got £1.125m - exactly half what the victor earned.
