Carter Page FISA Warrant Released -- Discredits Devin Nunes' Narrative

The Justice Department on Saturday released documents on the FISA warrant obtained to wiretap Carter Page, a former Trump campaign adviser. But they included damning passages concerning Page, who served for a time as a foreign policy adviser to the Trump campaign.

U.S. Rep. Adam Schiff, the California Democrat who is the ranking member of the House Intelligence Committee, said the documents underscore the "legitimate concern" the Federal Bureau of Investigation had about Page's activities.

Page, an American oil industry consultant who served as a foreign policy adviser to President Donald Trump as he was campaigning for president, has been under investigation by US intelligence agencies including the CIA, NSA and FBI, for alleged contact he has had with Russian officials under USA sanctions.

The Times said the materials include an October 2016 application to the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court to wiretap Page, and several renewal applications.

Michael Horowitz, the department's inspector general, said in March that he would review whether the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Justice Department followed proper procedures when they applied for a warrant to secretly conduct surveillance on Page and his ties to Russian Federation.

Republicans have denounced the FISA documents as evidence of abuse by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and Justice Department targeting the Trump campaign.

Republicans have claimed that the Federal Bureau of Investigation used in part a dossier compiled by former British intelligence officer Christopher Steele to justify the warrant, and failed to disclose to the court that Steele was employed by a firm funded by Democrats to do opposition research on Trump's business dealings. It added Page "has established relationships with Russian Government officials, including Russian intelligence officers".

The FBI told the FISA court it was aware that the person who hired Steele wanted to discredit Trump, but said Steele had in the past "provided reliable information".

Page, who has previously denied colluding with Russian Federation, could not immediately be reached for comment.
