N. Korea summons ambassadors to Pyongyang

U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo is due to informally brief U.N. Security Council envoys along with South Korea and Japan on Friday.

Russian Federation has agreed to help the USA negotiate with North Korea, President Donald Trump said Wednesday ― the same day a summit between Moscow and Pyongyang was announced.

Pompeo travelled to North Korea this month hoping to agree a roadmap for denuclearisation, but any progress has appeared limited, and Pyongyang issued an angry statement as soon as he left, accusing his delegation of making "gangster-like" demands.

"Discussions are ongoing and they're going very, very well", Trump told reporters at the White House ahead of a meeting with members of Congress.

The sanctions are remaining.

An editorial in the official state newspaper of the North Korean ruling party, Rodong Sinmun, argued that South Korea has been exaggerating its role in denuclearization talks between Pyongyang and Washington.

According to the BOK, the North had a per-capita Gross National Income of 1.46 million won (US$1,011), while the South's was 23 times higher.

Trump thanks major pharma companies for not raising prices

North Korea saw its economy contract 3.5 per cent previous year - its worst showing in two decades - as it was hit by sanctions over its weapons programmes, the South's central bank said Friday (Jul 20).

The South Korean government has generally refrained from openly criticizing the North's government during talks: On Friday, South Korean Prime Minister Lee Nak-yeon praised Kim as a North Korean leader who finally cared about the "livelihoods of people". Trump added in a tweet on Wednesday.

The data for 2017 show that North Korean exports - of products such as coal, iron ore and textiles - plunged nearly 40% to just $1.8 billion.

The latest fury, as Kim negotiates with the United States over abandoning his nuclear weapons programmes, came during a visit to the power plant's construction site in the northeast.

According to observers, this marks a shift in tone from Trump who previously said nuclear disarmament would start "very quickly". He acknowledged that could take a long time. A team of Stanford University researchers, including nuclear physicist Siegfried Hecker, proposed a 10-year roadmap for the task. North Korea has accused South Korea of kidnapping them, while South Korea says they chose to resettle on their own will.

"Any goal of rapid denuclearization will be proven as unrealistic as it is aggressive", they added.
