Mobile, Nokia seal $3.5B deal for 5G network

A statement from T-Mobile said Nokia would provide it with end-to-end 5G technology, assisting it to bring its nationwide 5G network to market for customers.

"This is our largest 5G deal to date, in fact it's one of our largest-ever deals", Phil Twist, Nokia's global marketing chief said in interview.

However, telecoms around the world have been hesitant about committing to commercial upgrades to their existing networks as many see 5G technology as a way of boosting capacity incrementally as opposed to offering new features.

Using 5G, Nokia and T-Mobile will develop, test and launch the next generation of connectivity services. Verizon and AT&T are the first and second mobile networks in the U.S., in terms of customer numbers.

In brief: Numerous cellular providers have promised widespread 5G network roll-outs in the near future, but T-Mobile is putting its money where its mouth is.

A T-Mobile spokesman said the plan was already baked into the company's capital spending forecast and doesn't replace Ericsson AB, which also sells gear to the wireless operator. It provided no further details on what cities Monday's commercial deal might cover. Nokia's fortunes have been on a downward turn in recent years, as demand for 4G network equipment has slowed. T-Mobile stock rose more modestly on Nasdaq.

Nokia has won big proving its credentials of being the leading 5G network solution provider.

Network vendors are counting on rivalry between the four big USA mobile carriers to drive initial 5G purchases this year into next. T-Mobile will be paying $3.5 billion to get a jump-start on the next generation of wireless networks in the United States.

"Nokia and T-Mobile will advance the large-scale deployment of 5G services throughout the United States", said Ashish Chowdhary, Nokia's chief customer operations officer, in a release from the companies.
