Excitement as English Premier League kicks off Friday

Excitement as English Premier League kicks off Friday

The inspiration behind Leicester's shock title triumph two seasons ago, the 2016 PFA Player of The Year joins an embarrassment of attacking riches at the Etihad as the champions bid for back-to-back Premier League titles.

The new rule to shut the window before the start of the league from the earlier date of August 31 meant that the English clubs had to complete all their deals 20 days before their Spanish, French and German counterparts.

Pochettino's belief is strengthened by Tottenham's success in persuading a number of key players, including England striker Harry Kane - the World Cup golden boot victor - to sign new contracts.

United chased a number of targets during the summer window, from Tottenham Hotspur defender Toby Alderweireld to a late move for Atletico Madrid stalwart Diego Godin, but were ultimately unsuccessful.

The company said that summer transfer in the English topflight sparked a drop in spending for the first time since 2010.

"It's not about adding because it's fashionable to sign players", Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino said. "Premier League clubs' gross player transfer expenditure of £1.2 billion continues to demonstrate the sheer purchasing power of the most commercially successful football league in the world".

The club has however released a statement on the current injuries it has ahead of their match against Pep Guardiola's men.

Last season's top-two teams spent nothing on Thursday.

The Spurs manager believes it was more important to keep his key players at the squad, with Harry...

"It will be a hard season for everybody", Mourinho said on Friday night.

Tottenham spent enormously to reconstruct their stadium and there was little left to commit into bringing more players to beef up the squad.

Manchester City were England's biggest spenders in the summers of 2008, 2009 and 2010, and it took until the end of the 2010/11 for them to win their first title.

The playmaker was a fundamental part of Sarri's midfield in Naples, dictating their tempo as they pushed Juventus all the way in last season's Serie A title race.
