Seattle plane crash: Family of man who crashed stolen plane issue statement

Ed Troyer, of the sheriff's office, described Russell as "suicidal".

The plane was chased by military aircraft, witnesses said.

He stressed that it was not a terrorism-related incident.

But investigators said Saturday they still anticipate they will be able to recover data recorders from the aircraft. "If you're going to access the aircraft ... you make sure that you check with someone else, and that someone else (will confirm) that ... you have the right authority to get onto that aircraft".

Airports nationwide will now look at whether their security procedures need to change, CNN safety analyst David Soucie said.

"I would like to apologise to each and every one of them", he is heard saying in the recording. "I'm a broken guy who had a few screws loose".

"Okay this insane. A pilot on the plane in front of us just went rogue and took off on an empty plane bypassing orders from the tower", tweeted Ben Schaechter, a passenger on an airplane that was taxiing to take off before the incident. It did not elaborate.

"Oh man", Russell says, "Those guys will rough me up if I try and land there".

He said: "I hope this doesn't ruin your day". "We're lucky that it went on a very unpopulated island", said NTSB Alaska Region Chief Debra Eckrote.

Later, a controller discusses getting a pilot on the radio to help Russell control the aircraft.

Referring to audio recordings of Russell talking to air traffic control during his hour-long flight, the statement said his "intent was not to harm anyone".

The man responds: "Awwww-right ... dammit". "I don't wanna, I don't know". "You want me to ride the brakes in the cockpit" or 'Hey, what are you doing?' Nobody did that", said Kelly.

An airline employee stole an airplane at Seattle airport today and was chased by two military jets before crashing on a nearby island.

"It was unfathomable, it was something out of a movie", a resident who saw the crash told The Seattle Times.

Only the unknown pilot was on the plane.

Law enforcement vehicles are shown, Friday, Aug. 10, 2018, at the ferry terminal in Steilacoom, Wash., near where a Coast Guard spokeswoman said the agency was responding to a report of a smoke plume and possible plane crash.

Algenon Franklin Cain, 28, of Red Springs, N.C. was arrested for trespassing on two separate occasions by Virginia State Police. Two Virginia state troopers who were monitoring the rally were later killed in the line of duty when their helicopter crashed.

Plane crashes after airline employee’s solo ‘unauthorized takeoff’ from Seattle airport
Alaska Airlines and Horizon Air officials said they were still working closely with authorities to investigate what happened. Terrence O'Shaughnessy, commander of the North American Aerospace Defense Command, said Friday night in a statement .

"I'm down to 2,100 (pounds) [952 kilos]", he says, "I don't know what the burnage is like on takeoff, but it burned quite a bit faster than I expected".

The plane, which PCSD identified as belonging to Horizon Air, crashed into Ketron Island.

"The greatest threat we have to aviation is the insider threat", said Erroll Southers, a former Federal Bureau of Investigation agent and transportation security expert.

"It's very unusual", she said. He briefly turned away, then turned back and saw the explosion as the plane crashed.

It wasn't immediately clear what training, if any, the man had in flying planes.

At a news conference, officials from Alaska Airlines and Horizon Air said that they were working with authorities.

The plane took off without authorization around 8 p.m. PT, according to airport officials. "But could you start a left turn please?"

"Yeah, he knew how to fly", she continued.

The air traffic controller can also be heard trying to talk him into landing. He does not appear to have been a licensed pilot.

But Schiavo said those security procedures are not always observed, especially for smaller aircraft like the 76-seat Bombardier Q400 hijacked Friday night.

It crashed about an hour after it was stolen and did not hit any ground structures.

The family of the airport worker suspected of stealing a plane from Seattle's main airport before crashing into an island have expressed their shock and grief. An Alaska Air spokesman said he did not have information about how the incident occurred.

The FBI is investigating the freakish incident in conjunction with the National Transportation Safety Board and local law enforcement.

President Donald Trump was briefed and the White House praised authorities´ quick response to the crisis.

Traffic arrives at Sea-Tac International Airport terminal Friday evening, August 10, 2018, in SeaTac, Wash.

In a video posted on YouTube last December, Russell shows luggage coming off and being loaded onto aircraft, and describes what the life of a ground service agent can entail. Outside of the USA, please visit the International Association for Suicide Prevention for a database of resources.
