Sevilla threaten to pull out of Spanish Super Cup tie

Sevilla threaten to pull out of Spanish Super Cup tie

The two clubs are scheduled to play on Sunday night in Tangier, Morocco (3:30 p.m. ET, ESPNEWS and ESPN Deportes), and the Spanish football federation (RFEF) announced one day before the game that the match would have no squad restrictions concerning the use of non-EU players.

It had been thought the Spanish Super Cup was the same but Sevilla said they would object to "an improper line-up".

The Spanish football federation (RFEF) announced that teams could field an unlimited number of players without European Union citizenship, a change in the rules for La Liga, which limits teams to three non-EU players in a matchday squad.

Sevilla FC is surprised by the RFEF's announcement 24 hours before the Super Cup.

"It has stated that as many non-EU players as desired can be registered".

Barcelona have taken part in nine of the last 10 Super Cups, but this was the first to take place over just one leg and in a foreign country.

Sevilla qualified for the match as last season's Copa del Rey runners-up, after Barcelona won the league and cup double.

Jorginho, Sarri debut with easy Chelsea win
This is despite new Chelsea coach, Maurizio Sarri , insisting that the board don't sell the Belgian star this summer. Kepa , 23, began his Stamford Bridge career with a clean sheet as Sarri's side toppled Huddersfield 3-0.

Three of Barcelona's signings this summer are non-EU with Arturo Vidal (Chile), Malcom and Arthur (both Brazilian) favourites to be in the Blaugrana's matchday squad for the Supercopa and beyond. Barca have taken four non-EU players to Morocco, including defender Marlon.

Philippe Coutinho has recently acquired a Portuguese passport through his wife, which means he is no longer considered a non-EU player.

Barca boss Ernesto Valverde was not happy with the rule change either.

"I think that Sevilla are professionals and we are professionals".

As Andres Iniesta's successor as Blaugrana captain, it fell on Messi to lift the Supercopa trophy, a landmark achievement for the unbelievable Argentine.
