Mass overdose of marijuana sees 76 ‘bodies dropping’ in park - Ireland

Dozens more cases were reported over the next 24 hours, all close to the downtown park. Officer David Hartman, a spokesman for the New Haven Police, said a "steady stream" of reported overdoses continued throughout the day.

Campbell said some of the people who overdosed gave detectives names to investigate.

Two other people were arrested, including one New Haven man who police believe was involved, though they haven't confirmed a link, Chief Anthony Campbell said. All of those overdoses were in the area of the New Haven Green, said Rick Fontana, the city's director of emergency operations.

An official said there were 114 calls for people needing to go to a hospital this week. Campbell said police found 32 bags of K2, or spice, in Parker's home. He was also charged in connection with drug sales in the city earlier this year, the chief said.

"The evidence photos do not mean that we have seized all of the contaminated K2 that was out there", he said.

All the victims had consumed the synthetic marijuana substance known as K2.

"We want people to be warned that what they have could be extremely unsafe and they should not use it", he said.

K2 can be smoked, vaped, eaten or even drank as tea. According to New Haven mayoral spokesperson Laurence Grotheer, some of the victims during the week were suffering from heatstroke rather than a drug overdose.

As such, "K2/Spice products are clearly not safe marijuana alternatives", the researchers said. New Haven police said one person is in custody.

Overdose deaths involving synthetic opioids rose sharply, while fatalities from heroin, prescription opioid pills and methadone fell, according to the C.D.C. estimates. "It's a nationwide problem that people are self-medicating for several different reasons, and every agency - police, fire, medical hospitals - all are strained at this time". Dr. John Douglas, of New Canaan's Silver Hill Hospital, says it's often sold as herbal incense or potpourri, but is sprayed with chemicals that can lead to an overdose.
