The Turkish currency fell again on Friday, breaking a three-day quiet spell in the country currency crisis, after the United States threatened to impose new sanctions on the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation country.

On Friday, the Turkish lira, which suffered record losses against the dollar earlier this week before recovering, fell about 5 percent, to about 6.11 to the dollar, after President Trump warned via Twitter that the country faces more punitive measures.

The issue has led to a dramatic souring of U.S. -Turkey relations. The currency was supported by Turkey's plan to cut spending, support for the banks and Qatar's pledge to invest $15bn in the country.

Investors are concerned that Turkey has amassed high levels of foreign debt to fuel growth in recent years.
