More than 320 people have been killed in the worst floods to hit the region in a century.

Many are still stranded in their homes with no food at various places in Alapuzha, Thrissur and Ernakulam districts. Over 3.53 lakh affected persons had been lodged in over 2,000 relief camps, he said.

He said the Army, Air Force, Navy and Coast Guard were assisting disaster relief agencies in the rescue, and a total of 38 helicopters had been pressed into service along with a number of aircraft and ships to ferry resources.

The Congress on Saturday demanded that floods in Kerala should be declared a "national calamity". This is the highest ever deployment of NDRF in a single state since its raising in 2006.

A Reuters witness in Aluva town, almost 250 km (155 miles) from state capital Thiruvananthapuram, said army helicopters airlifted up to 14 marooned residents, including children and elderly people from an apartment. The military has pushed in more than 200 boats. Additional motorboats have also been put on standby for deployment.

Indian-origin billionaire businessmen based in the UAE have announced Rs 125 million donation for flood relief operations in Kerala, according to a media report. "The cheque was handed over to Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan by Swaran Singh, CEO, Srinivasan Services Trust (SST)- the social arm of TVS Motor Company in Thiruvananthapuram", the firm said.

PM announced a financial assistance of Rs 500 crore to Kerala.

"The UAE government, under the leadership of President HH Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, and Vice President & Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum have underlined their support to Kerala through the formation of the special committee".

Vijayan said the government would help the migrant workers who may not be in a position to work immediately after being stranded in the floods.
