Netflix testing unskippable video promos between shows

A couple of years ago, we introduced video previews to the TV experience, because we saw that it significantly cut the time members spend browsing and helped them find something they would enjoy watching even faster. The streaming service, whose greatest appeal is arguably the fact that it doesn't have any ads, has begun experimenting with displaying ads at a certain point during a person's binge-watch session. Now Netflix is getting in on the fun in the opposite direction, testing out peoples' response to ads between episodes of TV.

But the damage had already been done, with many voicing their discontent and plans to cancel their subscriptions if they had to watch ads. A number of subscribers have also taken to Twitter to complain about the promotional videos, which displace preview information for the show being watched. A spokesperson for the streaming media giant indicated to Ars Technica that while they acknowledged the "chatter on social channels" - likely referring to the reddit megathreads on the matter - they were more interested in surveying how Netflix users actually interact with the advertisements in practice. They also denied that the ads did not display the option to skip them.

We haven't personally witnessed this yet, but a reddit thread is fired up about the test - With several users voicing their anger and frustration.

They claimed it conducts hundreds of tests per year, most of which aren't adopted.

Another added: 'Netflix has started putting ads for its s****y standup specials in between episodes of frasier. and probably other shows but ive got frasier on and it feels particularly offensive. keep frasier pure'. They can be skipped. A report says that this is not a feature that is rolling out to subscribers at this time, but is instead a test that Netflix is running to determine how to better promote content.

Tech website Ars Technica reports that initial sightings of the ads began to crop up on the Netflix Reddit community during the week and that users in America and the United Kingdom seemed to have been included in the test.

Netflix has about 130 million customers worldwide.
