After three bodies were recovered from a auto crushed under slabs of concrete, the Genoa prefecture raised its official death toll.

According to the Italian press agency ANSA, the family's auto was crushed by a concrete block from the bridge in Genoa.

The reinforced concrete structure gave way just before noon (1000 GMT) on Tuesday during a thunderstorm, sending more than 30 cars and heavy goods vehicles crashing to the ground from a height of 45 metres.

It said they were three family members, including a child, who had been travelling for a holiday when their auto, with about 30 other vehicles, plunged when the bridge gave way.

With Genoa's chief prosecutor saying that between 10 and 20 people could still be missing under the huge piles of concrete, rescue workers clambered across the rubble hoping to find survivors.
