Muslims are celebrating Eid al-Adha as over 2 million pilgrims carry out the final rites of the hajj in Saudi Arabia.

Eid al-Adha, also known as Festival of Sacrifice, is different from Eid al-Fitr which is celebrated earlier in the year at the end of Ramadan.

The day is marked with the sacrifice of an animal, usually a goat, sheep, or cow, and the distribution of the meat among neighbours, family members, and the poor.

Pilgrims attend noon prayers outside Namirah Mosque in Mecca during the annual pilgrimage. Hajj is a pilgrimage all Muslims must take at least once in their lives. God's command was a test to see if the Prophet would follow his command.

Eid Al Adha celebrations also coincide with the Haj pilgrimage and for the pilgrims, the celebration begins after the descent of the Haj pilgrims from the Mount Arafat on the 9th of Zul Hijjah. Some Muslims observe this Eid for three days.
