Rep. Duncan Hunter says he's eager for trial

He went on to assert that the charges come from politically-motivated Democrats in the Department of Justice trying to sink his reelection effort.

"My campaign did make mistakes", Hunter said in the Fox interview.

A U.S. House race in Southern California could become suddenly competitive after U.S. Rep. Duncan Hunter and his wife were indicted on corruption charges.

Mr Hunter - who represents part of San Diego County in California - was one of President Donald Trump's earliest supporters in Congress.

In echoes of President Trump himself, Hunter described the charges as a witch hunt before attacking the media for misleading headlines.

The couple was indicted Tuesday for misusing more than $250,000 in campaign cash for personal use, including personal vacations, groceries, alcohol and dental work. Ryan said in a statement the charges are "deeply serious" and Hunter would be "removed from his committee assignments pending the resolution of this matter".

Though the sequel has not been officially greenlighted yet, a plan is in the works, says The Hollywood Reporter . It's taken on a whole other life that I never dreamed was possible", he added.

In response, Hunter said, "I would say that's my socialist Democrat opponent, and that's what socialist Democrat opponents say". House Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi said Ryan should call on Hunter to resign. In March 2010, for example, the indictment alleges that Hunter spent more than $120 at Birchmere Music Hall with that congressman and two others, and the next month, Hunter claimed a $256 reimbursement for driving his vehicle on a trip to Virginia Beach with the same group.

"The congressman and his wife have a constitutional promise to their day in court, and we will not prejudge the outcome", Brulte said.

'After two years of investigation into my campaign, I have never been interviewed and they made a decision to prosecute'. As the primaries took place on June 5, there is no mechanism to replace Hunter on the ballot, which means his Democrat challenger, Ammar Campa-Najjar, will basically run uncontested despite winning less than 18 percent of the primary vote.

Hunter's wife - who was paid $116,000 by his campaign between 2010 and 2017 and given access to campaign funds as a consultant - dismissed campaign finance rules as "silly" when pressed by the campaign treasurer on her spending, according to the indictment'. It was a risk that has been looming large over Hunter's career for some time. "They overdrew their bank account more than 1,100 times in a 7-year period resulting in approximately $37,761 in "overdraft" and "insufficient funds" bank fees".

Besides the video games, the Hunters allegedly spent campaign funds on hotel rooms, airline tickets, meals, vacations, and more. "And I paid that back before my last election". There was no intent to stick donors with the cost, then-Hunter spokesman Joe Kasper said.
