Scientists confirm ice exists at Moon's poles

Most of the water is located in shadows of craters that are near the poles which, because of the tilt of the moon, never see the sun.

Scientists have confirmed the presence of glaciers on the southern and Northern poles of the moon.

Signs of ice on the Moon have been reported by scientists for years, but previous observations could have been explained by other phenomena, such as unusually reflective lunar soil, researchers said.

The opening became possible thanks to the tool of comparison of the Mineralogy of the moon M3, which was launched in 2008 on the ship Chandrayaan-1. By almost considering the manner in which that light bobbed off of a material, analysts can decide a great deal about it, and for this situation, it was simple for the rocket to see the distinction between the ice and the encompassing surface. M3 has already had a big lunar win - it helped discover water on the moon in 2009. In fact, the temperatures within these areas were usually in excess of -260 degrees Fahrenheit. We want a space station around the moon to be there for a very long period of time, and we want landers that go back and forth between the space station around the moon and the surface of the moon", Bridenstine said.

According to scientists, temperatures in permanently shadowed craters at the Moon's poles stay under -157C (-250F). Without an atmosphere, light bouncing around the surface of the Moon is scattered very weakly, producing a weak signal for the research team to work with.

"A future Moon mission is needed to examine the whole lunar PSRs [permanently shaded regions] to map out all water ices and understand the processes which led to water on the Moon".

Now, scientists can be more confident in saying water exists on the moon with the new findings published on in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

Earlier in the year, the Chinese and European space agencies said that they were planning to build a joint base on the Moon.
