Trump Orders Flags Lowered: 'I Repsect Senator John McCain's Service'

"At the request of the McCain family, I have also authorized military transportation of Senator McCain's remains from Arizona to Washington, D.C., military pallbearers and band support, and a horse and caisson transport during the service at the United States Naval Academy". The White House also returned its flags to full-staff by Monday, ignoring tradition to keep flags at half-staff until the day of interment.

In a letter, the national commander of the American Legion, Denise Rohan, urged the White House to "follow long-established protocol following the death of prominent government officials" and honour Mr McCain. "If I had to pick one person in this great land to explain to someone from a different planet who are these Americans, it would be John McCain with an assist from (his speechwriter) Mark Salter". Some of his most bitter adversaries are among those commemorating his passing. If that must happen, it can be done later.

Howard Kurtz weighs in on why Senator John McCain's sendoff has become a political litmus test.

When Trump signed into a military spending bill named after McCain earlier this month, he declined to mention the senator in his remarks.

Among them was a message from the foreign minister of Vietnam, where Mr McCain was shot down during the United States war with the southeast Asian nation.

"If he picks someone too far left, we're going to have a primary in two years", said Constantine Querard, a conservative Republican strategist. Jeff Flake, who, like McCain, outraged the state's conservative base for bucking Trump on immigration and other issues.

McCain's death narrows the number of Republican-held seats in the 100-member U.S. Senate to 50, with Democrats controlling 49.

French President Emmanuel Macron wrote that McCain was: "A true American hero".

"We weaken our greatness when we confuse our patriotism with tribal rivalries that have sown resentment and hatred and violence in all the corners of the globe", McCain said.

Jeff Flake, the junior Republican senator who served alongside McCain, Schumer said. "I think it's the same feeling for all Vietnamese people as he has greatly contributed to the development of Vietnam-U.S. relations", Duyet was quoted as saying.

Critics said this didn't show the usual level of respect for a public figure of Mr McCain's stature.

It came after growing outcry over Mr Trump's lack of praise for the 81-year-old former Republican presidential candidate, with whom he frequently clashed ever since his 2016 presidential bid.

Ignatius, a "Morning Joe" fixture, goes on to say he believes McCain was among those who could never imagine that enough Americans "would actually vote for someone of such low moral character".

The Vietnam News Agency said Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc and National Assembly Chairwoman Nguyen Thi Kim Ngan sent messages of condolence to McCain's family and U.S. Senate leaders, while Foreign Minister Pham Binh Minh paid respects to McCain at the embassy.
