CDC says STD rate in the United States is rising

The new numbers from the CDC show that chlamydia is common, but there is a concerning rise in cases of gonorrhea and syphilis.

According to a CBS News report, concerns are also mounting that gonorrhea could soon become resistant to all current antibiotics, officials from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control said.

Cases of chlamydia increased by almost seven percent, primary and secondary syphilis cases rose by more than ten percent, and gonorrhea cases soared by almost 19 percent over the past year, according to the CDC data.

"Sadly, it's not a surprising trend", said Rob Stephenson, a professor and director of the Center for Sexuality and Health Disparities at the University of MI in Ann Arbor, who was not involved in the new CDC research.

It marks the fourth consecutive year of sharp increases in STDs, the CDC said.

"We're sliding backward", Jonathan Mermin, director of CDC's National Center for HIV/AIDS, Viral Hepatitis, STD and TB Prevention, said.

"It is evident the systems that identify, treat, and ultimately prevent STDs are strained to near-breaking point".

Between 2013 and 2017, syphilis diagnoses spiked 76 percent, going from 17,375 to 30,644 cases.

A renewed commitment from health care providers - who are encouraged to make STD screening and timely treatment a standard part of medical care, especially for the populations most affected - is an important component to reverse current trends. Forty five percent of those cases were among 15-to 24-year-old females.

In a statement, the CDC said that the diseases are usually curable with the help of antibiotics, however, if left untreated the infection can lead to infertility, stillbirth in infants, and even an increased risk of HIV.

Ceftriaxone is the only remaining effective antibiotic for treating gonorrhea in the United States.
