McSally blows out Arpaio, Ward for showdown with Sinema in AZ

Voters go to the polls in Arizona and Florida today, picking nominees in critical Senate and gubernatorial races. In a low-key event at a Greek restaurant near his home, he said he'd dedicate himself to ensuring President Donald Trump gets re-elected in 2020.

Tuesday's primary election came as the Grand Canyon State mourned the loss of former Senator John McCain.

As in many GOP races across the country, candidates in the Republican primary competed to prove their loyalty to President Trump.

A digest of the top political stories from the Globe, sent to your inbox Monday-Friday.

A contest between Sinema and McSally is one of the most evenly matched of the cycle, said Jennifer Duffy, a senior editor at the non-partisan Cook Political Report, who is tracking Senate races. Such a scenario could leave McSally in a weak position heading into a general election campaign against the likely Democratic nominee, Rep. Kyrsten Sinema. Their showdown will be one of the key races in the midterms as Democrats attempt to win an Arizona Senate seat for the first time since 1988.

The results on both sides underscore the outsized influence of each party's most passionate voters in lower-turnout off-year elections. A strong vote for McSally could discourage the governor from picking someone whose profile is dramatically different than McCain's.

"Sorry, @realDonaldTrump. I made no endorsement in this race", Flake wrote. Despite competitive primaries in both parties for the Senate races, the GOP outdrew Democrats 456K/361K, at least so far. Will President Trump's favorite, Ron DeSantis, win the Florida Republican nomination for governor? She defeated state Rep. David Richardson, who ran on impeaching the president and criticized Shalala for previously having donated to Republicans.

While it is obviously not a amusing joke, it is good to know that Jason Sensation was not going to commit suicide or harm himself. Toronto Police said: "There were numerous tweets to Toronto Police regarding a threat made by Jason Sensation over Twitter".

Trump has not endorsed any of the three Republicans. So if DeSantis wins, it'll be another sign of Trump's stamp on the GOP.

Republicans know Scott can and will dump millions more of his own personal wealth into his campaign. If either Tallahassee mayor Andrew Gillum or activist Michael Hepburn can beat their better-known opponents, it would be a boost to the progressive movement, but it also might hurt Democrat's chances of flipping a vulnerable governor's mansion and House seat. The victor will be an immediate target of Republicans looking to keep control of the House.

UPDATE: Things have really tightened on the Democratic side.

It was the first signal of a potential upset in Arizona - which could largely be driven, analysts say, by Latinos and independent voters, that is, those not registered with either party. Democrats describe Edmondson's time in office as 'someone who fights for the little guy.' Former Oklahoma City Mayor Mick Cornett and Tulsa businessman Kevin Stitt will face off in the Republican runoff Tuesday.

Weekend events could cast a pall over contests in both states, though. Democrats think any of the three can win, pointing to the slim margin they lost by in 2014. Stitt is using his personal fortune to attack Cornett for not being sufficiently loyal to Trump and his administration.

The website VoteView, which estimates how liberal or conservative members of Congress are based on their legislative voting history, lists Sinema as the second-most conservative Democrat in the House, behind only the newly elected Conor Lamb of Pennsylvania.
