Firefighters say it is progressing mostly to the north, in brush and steep terrain.

The Delta Fire erupted Wednesday afternoon and within hours had devoured almost 8 square miles (21 square kilometres) of timber and brush on both sides of Interstate 5 near the OR state line. A shelter has opened for displaced residents in Mt. Shasta.

The so-called Delta Fire broke out shortly after noon on Wednesday about 10 miles north of Redding, Calif.

It was near the site of the Carr Fire, which led to eight deaths and destroyed hundreds of homes in the city of Redding and nearby areas.

Smoke from the Delta Fire captured on the Lakehead traffic cam which is located on I-5 north of the Lakehead overcrossing.

Officials said the blaze was human-caused but they didn't indicate whether it was arson or accident.

This is a developing story.

According to the forest service, the blaze started around 1:30 p.m. and is near the Vollmers Exit off of I-5. The highway has been closed in both directions in that area.

Truckers abandoned their vehicles Wednesday as flames roared up hillsides.

The Delta Fire was burning on both sides of Interstate 5, which has made it more hard to control the flames, Underhill said. That means rapid rates of spread and spotting, which throws embers out in front of the fire, lighting new fires as it advances.

Meanwhile, a forest fire in California's eastern Sierra Nevada continued to grow and impacts on travel were increasing, officials said.
