U.S. Open: Djokovic ends Millman's run to reach semis

The last eight at the year's final Grand Slam will also feature a rematch of the 2014 final between former champion Marin Cilic and Kei Nishikori of Japan plus 2017 finalist Madison Keys against Spanish 30th seed Carla Suarez Navarro.

The No. 21 ranked Nishikori defeated No. 7 ranked Cilic in five sets, 2-6, 6-4, 7-6, 4-6, 6-4.

"But the guy's won a lot of Grand Slams, and he knows how to win them and knows what this is all about". That was at Wimbledon in 1995, and both Shuzo Matsuoka and Kimiko Date lost in that round.

Seventh-seeded Croat Cilic, a three-times Grand Slam finalist who reached the showpiece game in Melbourne this year, has had a fairly easy path to the quarters apart from a five-set tussle in the third round with Australian Alex de Minaur. Nishikori said this week that he was nervous once that match began, but this one was nothing like that day.

Each man blew chances to gain control and perhaps have a much quicker ending to a match that had wild swings of momentum.

Djokovic took the first set in a hard hour. Djokovic then served out the set and Millman was in a 0-2 hole.

After Cilic evened the match by taking the fourth following a 10-minute break for heat, Nishikori was on the verge with running away with the fifth, holding a break point for a 5-1 lead.

Upon missing a gimme volley - after Millman retrieved a lob with some incredibly scrambling - and then pushing a return wide, Djokovic staggered back into position before tipping water over his head at the changeover.

Novak Djokovic has revealed the moment that likely marked his victory in the quarter finals match against Australia's John Millman. "I think Novak sometimes flies under the radar a little bit", Millman said.

Millman's incredible run in NY came to an end this morning but he was delighted with how he performed throughout the memorable run.

87 elephants found dead in Botswana sanctuary, poaching to blame
Botswana has had a reputation for an unforgiving approach to poachers and had largely escaped the elephant losses seen elsewhere. Poachers have also targeted rhino, said Chase, after six white rhino carcasses were found in recent months.

Djokovic, a two-times champion at Flushing Meadows, struggled with the humidity at Arthur Ashe Stadium but kept his cool mentally, saving the only break point he faced in the first set and wrapping up the opener in an hour.

"Really, if I could have just jagged a set, I think I could have been in there".

The Aussie saved another four in the opening game of the second set and as the duel continued both players were clearly feeling the effects of their long, entertaining rallies.

Naomi Osaka is the first Japanese woman to make the semifinals a Grand Slam event in 22 years.

Osaka, who is just 20 years old, is having a terrific 2018 season.

'I definitely left it all out there today, ' he said.

"She has won a Masters".

But Tsurenko said she was sick Wednesday, waking up with a sore throat and not breathing well.

Nadal and Federer are often considered the front-runners for the major titles but Djokovic is gunning for Grand Slam win No 14 this week - and he is well on course for success.

For Osaka, who is 20, this is her first trip past the fourth round at a major.
