Bangladesh women more at health risk than men due to inactivity

Bangladesh women more at health risk than men due to inactivity

"Unlike other major global health risks, levels of insufficient physical activity are not falling worldwide, on average, and over a quarter of all adults are not reaching the recommended levels of physical activity for good health", Guthold warned.

High-income countries had insufficient physical activity two times higher than low-income countries and that rate increased by five percent between 2001 and 2016.

Interestingly, women were less active than men in all regions of the world, apart from the East and Southeast Asia. This includes SA where 47.3% of women don't do enough exercise compared to 28.5% of men.

The WHO recommends at least 150 minutes of "moderate-intensity" exercise, such as brisk walking, swimming or gentle cycling weekly, or 75 minutes of "vigorous-intensity" activity like running or team sports.

Women do worse than men, with 40 per cent not taking enough exercise, according to data gathered by the World Health Organisation.

In the United Kingdom, 40% of women and 32% of men were insufficiently active in 2016.

The study also said that there has been no improvement in global levels of physical activity since 2001.

Walter R. Thompson, an associate dean and a professor of kinesiology and health at Georgia State University, said that the study's most important point is that "physical inactivity is pandemic and not a characteristic of low-income or high-income countries".

BA says it will be contacting customers who were affected, and advises them to contact their banks and credit card providers. People who made bookings during that time may have had their personal and financial details stolen.

Cranberries Singer Dolores O’Riordan Died By Drowning Due To Alcohol Intoxication
O'Riordan was found by police officers in the bathroom of Room 2005 at London's Hilton Park Lane Hotel on 15 January. Sales and streams of The Cranberries' back catalogue rocketed by 1,000% in the days after her death.

According to the World Health Organization, in Kuwait, Saudi Arabi, Iraq and American Samoa, more than half of the population doesn't get enough exercise.

Where are physical inactivity levels highest?

Only 6 percent of residents of Uganda and Mozambique were too sedentary, the report found, making those countries the most active in the world.

The surveys took note of physical activity in work, at home, for transport and during leisure time - so we have no excuses.

"Regions with increasing levels of insufficient physical activity are a major concern for public health and the prevention and control of non-communicable diseases", says Dr Regina Guthold lead author of the study.

The high inactivity in wealthier countries can be explained with the fact that many people lead increasingly stationary lives, in which occupations and recreational activities have become more sedentary, transport has become motorized, and the general use of technology has risen.

The study's authors suggest that countries improve those tactics and provide environments that encourage physical activity. That's because a lack of exercise increases one's risk of heart disease, stroke, high blood pressure, cholesterol, and body weight.

Most countries do have policies to tackle the issue of physical inactivity but very few have demonstrated impact. As a next step the researchers would work on assessing the levels of activities among the children and youth.

"We need to turn this around and make physical activity as part of your daily life the easiest, most convenient approach", Knell said.
