Tonight 23-year-old opera singer Nia Imani Franklin who competed in the competition as Miss New York won the title of Miss America 2019 becoming the 92nd victor of the title, which concluded on live TV Sunday evening in Atlantic City, New Jersey.

"It took a lot of perseverance to get here", Franklin said after her win.

The Wrap reports that Madeline Collins was given the question, "what is the biggest issue facing Americans today", as part of the program's "interview segment", which replaced the swimsuit competition in a change made earlier this year. "I grew up at a predominately Caucasian school and there was only five percent minority, and I felt out of place so much because of the color of my skin", Franklin said.

Things are getting political at the Miss America pageant. The pageant's judges included Laila Ali, Bobby Jones, Jessie James Decker, Randy Jackson, Soledad O'Brien, Alli Webb, and Carnie Wilson.

The judges were so impressed with her answer, she was awarded the $1,000 prelim onstage question scholarship.

The Miss America contest was started in 1921 by a group of Atlantic City businessmen who created a week of festivities, including the Atlantic City Bathing Beauty Contest, as a way to extend the summer resort season past Labor Day.

In December, former CEO Sam Haskell resigned after emails in which he insulted the appearance, intellect and personal lives of former pageant winners were leaked.

Adding to the intrigue was a remarkable letter released by Mund, the outgoing Miss America, who said Carlson and Hopper had bullied, silenced and marginalized her.

In an interview on Megyn Kelly's NBC show last month, two former Miss America winners told her they thought Miss America CEO Regina Hopper should "absolutely" resign due to all of the controversy.

Mund only appeared at the very end of the pageant before the next victor was crowned.
