Papadopoulos Says His Testimony Could Prove Collusion

Papadopoulos Says His Testimony Could Prove Collusion

The sentence drew a quick response from Trump on Twitter, as he scoffed at the two weeks of prison time by comparing it to an unverified cost figure for the Mueller probe.

Ex-Trump campaign adviser George Papadopoulos suggested Sunday his testimony to special counsel Robert Mueller "might have helped move something towards" demonstrating collusion between the campaign and Russian Federation.

"The collective energy in the room seemed to be interested", said Papadopoulos in the clip, noting that candidate Trump nodded, but wasn't committed either way. He was open to the idea and he deferred of course to then senior Sen.

He added that after the March meeting, others in the campaign were aware of his efforts pursuing a Trump-Putin meeting, including then-campaign manager Corey Lewandowski and senior aide Sam Clovis.

Papadopoulos' remarks directly contradicts what Sessions told Congress under oath, that he "pushed back" on the potential meeting.

"All I can say is, my recollection differs from his at this point", Papadopoulos said Sunday.

Papadopoulos repeated Sunday that he was "remorseful" for his actions.

A lawyer for Sessions, Chuck Cooper, said in a statement Monday that his client "has publicly testified under oath about his recollection of this meeting, and he stands by his testimony".

While Papadopoulos is planning a move to California to begin his new life supporting his wife's fledgling acting career, he may not be entirely finished with the investigations that led him to prison.

Papadopoulos told ABC after that Trump campaign meeting in March, he sought to use his connection to Mifsud to arrange a Trump-Putin sit down. His client was also affected by Trump's cries of "fake news" and his casting of the Russian Federation investigation as a "witch hunt" just days before his FBI interview.

Manafort was convicted last month on unrelated bank and tax fraud charges as part of Mueller's probe.

During the campaign, Papadopoulos met with Professor Joseph Mifsud in London, who introduced him to a woman named Olga who had told Papadopoulos she was a niece of Vladimir Putin.

He continued, "And I found myself as somebody who worked incredibly hard over the past year with the campaign to actually have the candidate Trump be elected. And I found myself pinned between the Department of Justice and the sitting president, and having probing questions that I thought might incriminate the sitting president".

According to Mueller team's federal indictment, Papadopoulos was told by Mifsud in April 2016 that Russian officials had "dirt" on Hillary Clinton in the form of "thousands of emails".

Papadopoulos was then asked if he believes Mueller's investigation will show there was collusion between Trump's presidential campaign and the Russians.

He also described in vivid detail his experience being arrested shortly after landing at Virginia's Dulles airport, on a flight from Athens. Papadopoulos said. "I wasn't in some sort of headquarters".

"Did they set you up?" Sunny Hostin asked. "You never told anyone?"
